Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP)
Platelets are the cells in our body that contain growth factors, and are responsible for stimulate the normal wound healing process., similar to how skin heals after a scrape. With the technique employed at the Functional Medicine Center, we create a supra-therapeutic level of your own platelets (over 500% more platelets than normal blood).
Many musculoskeletal conditions like sprains, strains, inflammation, and arthritis have the potential to be improved by using PRP.
Many providers in the region are offering PRP as a standalone treatment. It has an excellent track record of safety with low pain to administer and low risk of side effects. As everything we do in patient care at The Functional Medicine Center is grounded in science, we strive to offer more than other providers. Because of this, we have the ability to add Ozone Gas, Vitamin B, and numbing agents that have been proven to not interfere with PRP to become an enhanced PRP called Prolozone.
Standard PRP treatments involve collecting a small amount of your blood and spinning it in a centrifuge to separate the platelets from the red cells. This is part of our process at The Functional Medicine Center. Head to our Intravenous Ozone Therapy page to learn more about Ozone that can be added to your PRP treatment.
“The clinical application of platelet-rich plasma (PRP) is based on the increase in the concentration of growth factors that are released from (the) alpha-granule (simply the container within the blood that holds growth factors) of the concentrated platelets and in the secretion of proteins which are able to capitalize on the healing process at the cellular level. Thus, youth is in your blood as it has a magical power imposed in the platelet factors.” (1)
Many of our patients have been for surgical consultations but really don’t want surgery. We are more than happy to discuss how PRP may help you and may help you to avoid surgery. We truly appreciate when patients have been for surgical consults because we know you’ve already been evaluated by an amazing diagnostician and that you’ve probably already had appropriate x-rays or MRI to assess your condition. As insurances don’t typically reimburse for PRP, most in-network providers charge for PRP, even though you are often paying for an office visit before and after PRP. At The Functional Medicine Center, our PRP offers more than other providers at the most competitive price in the Triangle!
